Mary Lincoln
Etching, ca. 1975; edition not stated. Image size 7” x 10½”; overall size 12” x 16”. A most interesting print, probably based on a photograph created by "spirit photographer" William Mumler, who specialized in images pairing the living and the departed. Mary Todd Lincoln was an ardent spiritualist both before and after her husband's death. At a seance in Boston which she attended using a pseudonym, her late husband is said to have appeared before her. Mumler's interpretative composite photograph depicted Mrs. Lincoln seated and her husband standing behind her with his hands resting on her shoulders. Fine condition.
