Abe Frajndlich (1946 - )
An innovative freelance photographer best known for his portraits, Abe (Abraham Samuel) Frajndlich was born in a displaced persons camp in Frankfurt, Germany. During his youth, Frajndlich moved several times, finally settling in the United States; he lived in New York City for thirty-five years, and now resides in Cleveland, Ohio.
Frajndlich received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, followed by a three year residency with Minor White, the celebrated photographer who at the time was chairman of the Department of Photography at The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and subsequently pursued further studies in photography with Nathan Lyons at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York.
He has contributed work to numerous publications including the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, New York Times Magazine, and the London Observer. Frajndlich regularly conducts photography workshops for aspiring young photographers; his work has been widely exhibited in both Europe and the United States.

Art Blakey (1919 - 1990), the noted drummer and bandleader, developed an aggressive playing style called Hard Bop. He founded his legendary band Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers in 1954 and performed worldwide during his long and successful career. In 1985, he recorded five albums with the band at Sweet Basil, the famous jazz club at 88 7th Avenue South in New York City (1974 - 2001), where he often appeared. Frajndlich photographed Blakey at Sweet Basil four years before the great jazzman’s death.
