Julius John Lankes (1884 - 1960)
Printmaker Julius J. Lankes was born in Buffalo, New York. He graduated from the Buffalo Commercial and Electro-Mechanical Institute and worked as a draftsman prior to his studies at the Art Students’ League of Buffalo and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. By the early 1920s, his woodcuts were published in in numerous periodicals; his career as an artist spanned four decades, during which Lankes created approximately 1400 works. He taught at Wells College, Aurora, New York, and continued his freelance work. By 1941, he was elected to the National Academy of Design. In 1950, he relocated to Durham, North Carolina, where he lived until his death.
