Charles Henry Miller (1842 - 1922)
Landscape painter and etcher Charles Henry Miller was originally trained in medicine, receiving his degree in 1864. After a single voyage as ship’s surgeon, he abandoned medicine for good, turning his energies to art thanks to the influence of the galleries and museums that he toured while his ship lay at anchor in Liverpool between crossings. A naturally talented painter, Miller had first exhibited his paintings at the National Academy of Design in 1860, and his first etchings were produced in 1866. For three years beginning in 1867, he studied painting under Adolf Lier at the Bavarian Royal Academy in Munich. Throughout his long career, Miller focused on the pastoral terrain of Long Island, producing numerous paintings that were widely exhibited and eagerly collected. He died in Queens.
