Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Barry Moser is a printmaker, illustrator, printer, essayist, and teacher. He studied with George Cress, Leonard Baskin, Fred Becker, and Jack Coughlin. His work is represented in numerous collections, museums, and libraries in the United States and abroad, and he has exhibited both here and overseas in both one-man and group exhibits. He is a member of numerous professional societies and the recipient of honorary degrees in recognition of his contributions to the arts. He is a faculty member at both the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island and at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts.

The Great Whale
Wood engraving, approximately 6-5/8" x 10½, 1978. Commissioned by The Arion Press, San Francisco, California for its monumental edition of Moby Dick designed by Andrew Hoyem. Moser produced one hundred blocks, of which this is far and away the most dramatic and kinetic. The number of proofs is not known, but this copy is warmly inscribed "The working proof for the great whale from Moby Dick - for Dear Gordon - Barry" by Moser to his friend, the late bookseller and publisher Gordon Cronin. A spectacular accomplishment in its own right, framed using archival materials.
