Timothy Cole Gallery II
Owing to its size, our presentation of the wood engravings of Timothy Cole consists of three separate galleries displaying our entire inventory in the chronological order of their publication. The creation date frequently inscribed in the matrix often precedes publication by one or more years.
Our source for the order of this presentation is the checklist compiled by Ralph Clifton Smith, which was originally published in 1925 and subsequently reproduced in booklet form with the author’s permission by Holman’s Print Shop of Boston in October, 1931, following Timothy Cole’s death earlier that year.
This second group of wood engravings begins with checklist number 334, “Dido Building Carthage,” (1900), after an oil by J. M. W. Turner, and ends with number 404, “Intimité, Dit Aussi la Grande Soeur (The Kiss),” (1910), after a painting by Eugene Carrière.
