George Mackley (1900 - 1983)
Born in Tonbridge, Kent, George Mackley was educated at the Judd School, Tonbridge. He trained as a teacher of art at the Goldsmiths' College, London, specializing in painting and etching. In 1935, Mackley learned basic wood engraving technique from Noel Rooke and from that moment embraced wood engraving as the perfect complement to his career as an educator, affording as it did an outlet for his meticulous approach to art within the time constraints imposed by his primary obligations. His masterful wood engravings are among the finest of the mid-twentieth century. His Wood Engraving, published in 1948, remains one of the leading manuals on the engraver's technique.
Engraved In The Wood
Portfolio of sixty-eight wood engravings, edition of 300, published in 1968 by The Two Horse Press. The engravings were printed by Will and Sebastian Carter at the Rampant Lions Press, Cambridge, England. Fifty-five of the engravings were printed from the original blocks; thirteen were reproduced from wood engravings because the original blocks had been planed smooth and reused. Includes a 9-3/4" x 12" booklet bound in dark orange cover stock with a diagonal crease in the lower right front cover, containing "An Appreciation" by Ruari McLean and "A Glimpse Of The Artist" by Armida Maria-Theresa Colt. A second folder contains the engravings and a checklist.. Both are housed in a clamshell portfolio box made by Gray's of Cambridge, covered with brown cloth with a dark orange title strip pasted to the spine; the box measures 10-3/8" x 12-13/16" x 1½" and is in sound condition but with moderate shelf wear. This is copy 50, and is signed by George Mackley on the edition statement following the title page. The text and engravings, printed on mould-made paper, are in fine condition.
