Philip Kappel (1901 - 1981)

Etcher and book illustrator Philip Kappel was born in Hartford, Connecticut and graduated from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. He also studied with marine artist Philip Little in Salem, Massachusetts and was employed as an artist by several American steamship lines. He made six trips around the world on sailing vessels to gather themes, mainly maritime, for his etchings, which held by major American museums and the Biblotheque National in Paris His artwork constitutes s a record of the shipping industry in the United States at its peak. Kappel received many awards for his work. He was the author of several books, including Boothbay Harbor-A Portfolio of Sketches, 1924, Louisiana Gallery, 1950, Jamaica Gallery, 1960, and New England Gallery, 1966.

Luigi Kasimir (1881 - 1962)

Noted printmaker Luigi Kasimir, the son and grandson of painters, was born at Ptuj, Slovenia, then a part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. He attended the Vienna Academy of Art and studied under Wilhelm Unger, who introduced him to the technique of the hand-colored etching. Kasimir was one of the earliest practitioners of color etching creating separate plates for each color and employing as many as six different plates for each color in a given work in a painstaking process of hand registration.

While Kasimir is justly famous for his etchings, he also produced oils and pastels. His work depicted landscapes, monuments, street scenes, and tourist landmarks throughout Europe and North America. His etchings are held in the collections of numerous galleries and museums including The National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Israel Museum, Jerusalem; and the Frye Art Museum, Seattle. He died at Grinzing, a suburb of Vienna.

Fulton Market No. 1

This print has been removed from its original mount, cleaned and de-acidified, and re-matted using conservation grade materials. A wonderful depiction of the anachronistic Fulton Fish Marked against a backdrop of the skyscrapers of Manhattan to the north. Overall very good condition, with minor crease in the extreme lower right corner and a thin perimeter of residual toning around the sheet where it had once been taped to its mount with brown kraft tape.

New York Stock Exchange

Color etching, ca. 1936; edition not stated. Image size 11” x 17-3/4” sheet size 15½” x 21-3/4” (see below). Signed in pencil by the artist in the lower margin. This print has been removed from its original mount, cleaned and de-acidified, and re-matted using conservation grade materials.The image itself is in fine condition; the sheet itself suffers from minor losses about an inch from the plate mark on both sides and across the top where a Troglodyte - or perhaps a Visigoth - had glued the mat to the print using a non-water-soluble adhesive, and where the subsequent physical removal of the mat by a descendant of the framer produced a series of craters along the path of the adhesive. In the lower margin, the removal of the mat had produced more pronounced damage and left actual holes in the sheet; as a result, the badly damaged strip has been removed and the two sound pieces of the sheet rejoined using water-soluble materials. Happily, none of this wanton butchery has affected the image or sight area, and the print is now clean, stable, and attractive. Price reflects the foregoing condition problems.

Edwin Kaufman (1906 - 1939)

Painter and print maker Edwin Kaufman was born in Cleveland, and began his studies at the Council Educational Alliance. He graduated from Central High School, then well known for its art and design curriculum, and entered the Cleveland School of Art.

In 1929, he won the Agnes Gund European Traveling Scholarship, which funded his European studies the following year. He studied under Hans Hoffman in Munich and Heidelberg and Henry De Waroquier and Othon Friesz at the Academie de la Grand Chaumiere, in Paris.

Between 1926 and 1937, Kaufman exhibited regularly and extensively at the annual May Show at the Cleveland Museum of Art, receiving awards for his work on four separate occasions. In 1932 he exhibited his work at a one-man show of etchings, lithographs and drawings at the De Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco.

Kaufman found work as a commercial illustrator but appears to have derived much of his income from printmaking. During the 1930s Kaufman was active in the Cleveland Print Makers and also served as president of a short-lived print club, The International Print Guild, with its headquarters at 509 Fifth Avenue, which circulated a print a month by an international group of artists, including Sir D. Y. Cameron, Frank Brangwyn, Lucien Simon, Karl Hofer and such American artists as Adolf Dehn, Louis Lozowick, and Wanda Gag. Established in 1933, the organization lasted just a year before folding. He joined the New York branch of the WPA in 1935, for whom he produced etchings of New York, concentrating on the city’s bridges, harbors, and poorer working areas.

Edwin Kaufman, his wife, and their young son were killed in an automobile accident in Pennsylvania on their return trip home following a family visit in Cleveland.

Margaret Drury Kemp-Welch (1874 - 1968)

Draftsman, painter, water colorist and etcher Margret Drury Kemp-Welch was born in Brighton, England. She studied at Hubert von Herkomer's school in Bushey, Hertfordshire and subsequently taught at Clapham High School. She exhibited her work at several venues including the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Painters-Etchers. During her career, she lived in London and later in Devon, where she died.

Norman Kent (1903 - 1972)

Best known for his woodcuts and watercolors, Norman Kent was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1925. He was awarded a full scholarship to the Art Students League in New York where he finished his studies under Leftwich Dodge and the noted woodcut artist Alan Lewis. Kent began his career as a Buffalo-based illustrator before teaching at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York. He served as the editor of American Artist magazine for over 25 years. His work has been collected by many museums and libraries, and a nearly complete collection of his woodcuts and linocuts is held by the Special Collections Department of the Lauinger Library at Georgetown University. Kent died at Rochester, New York.

Rockwell Kent (1882 - 1971)

Born in Tarrytown Heights, New York, Rockwell Kent was one of the most influential American artists and illustrators of his time. He was a student at the Horace Mann School in New York City and subsequently studied architecture at Columbia University. Kent developed a strong interest in painting and took up the study of art under William Merritt Chase at the Shinnecock Hills School. He later studied at the New York School, under Robert Henri and Kenneth Hayes Miller, and finally as an apprentice to Abbott Thayer at Dublin, New Hampshire. He wrote and illustrated a number of books including the three-volume Lakeside Press edition of Moby Dick, held by many to be one of the most beautiful books of the twentieth century.

His work is frequently identified with that of the American Social Realists and the great muralists of the 1920s and 1930s. A political activist, Rockwell Kent championed social causes from the 1930's until his death. His consistent support of radical causes contributed to a decline in his artistic popularity with the American public during the 1940s and 1950s, though his esteem among devotees of prints and printmaking has never flagged. He died at Plattsburgh, New York.

Unpublished illustration for Candide

Lithograph, ca 1928, edition unknown. Image size 5" x 2-1/8". Rockwell Kent's stamp in lower right corner. Candide was the very first book published by Random House in an edition of 1470 copies printed on imported French paper, 95 of which were hand colored by four different artists working under Kent's supervision. The type, designed by Lucian Bernhard, was cast by the Bauersche Giesserei, the venerable foundry established in 1837 in Frankfurt (spelled Frankfort in the colophon, ye gods!), Germany, and was hand set. All of the foregoing is an indication of the pain and expense that the publishers took to make Candide a most memorable debut by the house of Cerf and Klopfer. Someone - presumably one or both of the principals - decided that one of Kent's illustrations was more candide than they dared risk, and was omitted from the book as issued.

The illustration accompanies copy number 296 of the black-and-white edition of Candide, signed in ink by Kent in the colophon. The house drawn by Kent in the colophon was adopted as the logo of the new firm.

Troy Kinney (1871 - 1938)

Artist, etcher, and author Troy Kinney was born in Kansas City, Missouri. He attended Yale University, graduating in 1896. After a brief stint as a newspaper illustrator in Baltimore, he enrolled in the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1900 he married Margaret West Kinney (1872 - 1952) who as “The Kinneys,” were leading illustrators of early 20th century books and periodicals. Troy became a member of the Chicago Society of Etchers, and was also a member of the Society of American Etchers and the National Academy of Design.
Kinney was widely recognized for his portrayals of dance performers, working with Anna Pavlova, Ruth St. Denis and others over a number of years. He and his wife co-authored and illustrated a number of books about dance. Troy Kinney died at his home in Falls Village, Connecticut.

Esther Kirshenbaum, a painter and lithographer, was born and raised in Michigan. Trained in the sciences, she taught and tutored in her chosen field but turned instead to art. She spent several years living and working as an artist in New York City before returning to Ann Arbor, Michigan where she was Director of the Michigan Guild Gallery, and taught printmaking. She returned to New York City and currently lives in Brooklyn.

Oskar Kokoschka (1886 - 1980)

Painter, printmaker and writer Oskar Kokoschka, a leading Expressionist artist, was born in Pöchlarn, Austria. He attended school in Vienna and at age 18 won a scholarship to the School of Arts and Crafts, where he le3arned drawing and bookbinding, and where he also taught. In 1907, Kokoschka become a member of the Vienna Crafts Studio, which supplied him with decorative arts commissions over the ensuing two years, which reflected his primary interest in the human figure. While at the Vienna Crafts Studio, Kokoschka also learned how to paint in oils.

The prominent Viennese architect Adolf Loos, to whom Kokoschka was introduced in 1908, was instrumental in launching the younger man’s career by introdcing him to like-minded fellow artists and by helping him secure commissions for a series of portraits in which the rising artist used intense color to depict the emotional aspects of his subjects, a marked departure from the prevailing impressionistic style.

Following a year-long stay in Berlin, Kokoschka returned to Vienna in 1911. His paintings and drawings were shown at Der Sturm gallery alongside works by Klee, Kandinsky. Upon the outbreak of the first World War, he enlisted in the Austrian Army. In 1915 his service ended when he was severely wounded. From 1919 – 1923, Kokoschka was a professor of fine arts at the Dresden Academy. During that period he traveled widely and produced a series of dramatic landscapes. In 1931 Kokoschka once again returned to Vienna, but in 1934 he moved to Prague, where he met and married Olda Palkovska. There. he was commissioned to do a portrait of Tomáš Masaryk, the philosopher and then-President of Czechoslovakia.

In 1937, Kokoschka expressed rage and indignation when his works were banned from public display in Germany, swept up in the National Socialist campaign against “degenerate art.” Following the annexation of Austria and the subsequent Munich agreement, Kokoschka fled to London with his wife. There, he produced a number of canvases dealing with antiwar themes and highlighting the range of human suffering wrought by the war. Following the war, Kokoschka’s work was widely shown at a series of exhibitions throughout Europe. He moved permanently to Switzerland and established an international Summer Academy for the Visual Arts in Salzburg. He died at Montreux, Switzerland.

A wonderful Expressionist portrait of the actess Käthe Richter. Founder and editor Paul Westheim published Das Kunstblatt monthly from 1917 to its final issue in March, 1933. The magazine was a bold, broad-gauge survey of avant-garde work by leading European artists, playwrights and writers of the era, as well as critical surveys of Asian, African, and Indian art. Condemned by the National Socialist regime, the magazine was suppressed and Paul Westheim fled Germany later that year.

Kathe Kollwitz (1867 - 1945)

Printmaker and sculptor Kathe Kollwitz was born Kathe Schmidt in Königsberg, East Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia). She studied at the Artsts' School in Berlin and, under Karl Stauffer-Bern, created her first etchings in 1890. In 1891 she married and settled with her husband Karl Kollwitz in north Berlin, a working class district where he practiced medicine. Throughout the course of her artistic life, Kollwitz was an eloquent advocate for victims of social injustice, war and inhumanity, and her lifelong proximity to the poor and downtrodden kindled her admiration for their courage.

Her first masterwork was the cycle of three lithographs and three etchings depicting the Silesian Weavers' revolt of 1842, exhibited in 1898, followed in 1908 by the Peasants' War cycle, six etchings depicting the sixteenth century rebellion of farmers in southern Germany; a work that is widely regarded as her finest in this medium.

In 1904, Kollwitz studied sculplture at the Academie Julian in Paris and went on to produce a series of emotionally powerful works, including the intensely personal Die Eltern (The Parents), a memorial to her son Peter who was was killed in Flanders during World War I.

Impressed by the woodcuts of Ernst Barlach, Kollwitz produced a number of works in this medium beginning in 1919. In 1920, she was elected a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts, the first woman to be so honored. With the advent of National Socialism, Kollwitz was forced to resign her position at the Academy and her works were suppressed. Owing to her worldwide reputation, she was largely left alone by the authorities. She died in Moritzburg, near Berlin, in the closing days of World War II.

This is the first in a cycle of six prints entitled Revolt of the Weavers (1893-98) which drew high critical acclaim when it was shown at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition in 1898. The recommendation that Kollwitz receive a gold medal in recognition of the consummate emotional and technical artistry of her work was vetoed by that incomparable art connoisseur, Kaiser Wilhelm II, who took great umbrage at both the gender of the artist and the subject of the series. Typical of her frank depiction of the oppression of Germany's poorest workers, the Weavers' revolt set the tone for the grand theme of her subsequent work. Mourner, from Gedenkblatt Für Karl Liebknecht

The original edition of this image, which was cut from the larger and more complex original plate published in 1919 (Klipstein 137, states I - IV), was printed 1n 1933 on either handmade (opaque) or Japan (thin, translucent) paper. These proofs were signed by Kollwitz but this entire edition was not issued, probably due to dramatically changed political circumstances. The 1945 edition was posthumously printed and was either stamped with Kollwitz's facsimile signature or, as in this case, embossed with the von der Becke blind stamp. Image size 6¼” x 11;” sheet size 10½” x 15¾.” Edition size unknown.

Social Democrats Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxembourg, together with like-minded socially progressive organizations, founded the German Communist Party on January 1, 1919 in the midst of the civil war that embroiled Germany at that time. Both were captured by the right-wing paramilitary Freikorps and both were murdered just two weeks later on January 15.

Käthe Kollwitz, whose elder son Peter was killed in the first week of World War 1, sympathized with the proletariat among whom she and her physician husband lived and worked, and created the large-format etching “Memorial for Karl Liebknecht” at that time.

In 1933, the original plate was divided. The solitary mourner at the left of the original work is the subject of the smaller unnamed impression thus created. von der Becke blind stamp, overall very good condition. Klipstein 137 / V / A

Etcher Julius Komjáti, the son of an Inspector of Forests, was born in Komjat, Hungary. He received a teaching diploma at Budapest in 1911 and entered the Academy of Fine Arts in 1914. Called up for service in the First World War, he was awarded a diploma as Professor of Design at the Academy upon his return, and in 1920 produced his first etchings. In 1927, Komjáti received a scholarship to study in England under Malcolm Osborne at the Royal College of Art and arrived there in 1928. He spent the next ten years in England, and during that time produced a body of superb work, some 74 plates, which were published by H. C. Dickens of London. His work was so highly regarded that he was one of few foreign artists elected to the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers.

His wartime experience as a prisoner of war, held by the Romanian Army for eighteen months in deplorable conditions, had a profound effect on Komjáti’s art, imparting both an intensity and spirituality that calls to mind the later work of Käthe Kollwitz. He returned to Hungary in 1938 and remained their for the rest of his life.

Benjamin Kopman (1887 - 1965)

Painter and printmaker Benjamin Kopman was born in Vitebsk, Russia., and emigrated to the United States with his family in 1903. In 1905 Kopman enrolled at the National Academy of Art where he remained for 6 semesters. His first major exhibition was at the annual exhibition of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1914, followed by several others during the 1920s. Kopman worked for the WPA as an artist during the Depression and had solo exhibitions in the late 1930s and 1940s. His paintings and prints are distinctive for their primitive character and their use of heavy black outlines that suggest the influence of Rousseau and Roualt.

Kopman’s work is held in the collections of many institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

Leon Kroll (1884 - 1974)

Born in New York City, Leon Kroll was an American painter and lithographer. He studied at the Art Students League of New York under John Henry Twachtman, and at the Académie Julian in Paris with Jean Paul Laurens. In 1913, Kroll showed work at the Armory Show and later taught at the Art Students League of New York and the school of the National Academy of Design, where he was named an Associate in 1920 and a full Academician in 1927. In 1930, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He was also named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1950. Kroll died at Gloucester, Massachusetts.

Jinan Kuniyoshi (1951 - )

Printmaker and teacher Jinan Kuniyoshi was born in Japan. He is best known for his imaginative mezzotints, executed in both large and miniature formats. His work has been exhibited around the world, and is held by numerous public and private collections, including the Library of Congress and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art here in the United States. Mr. Kuniyoshi presently teaches at the Toyo Institute of Art and Design in Tokyo.

Jean-Émile Laboureur (1877 – 1943)

A painter, printmaker and illustrator, Jean-Émile Laboureur was born in Nantes, France. He moved to Paris in order to pursue legal studies but changed direction and enrolled instead in the Académie Julian, where he studied wood engraving under Auguste Lepère; at the suggestion of his mentor Toulouse-Lautrec, Laboureur traveled widely for the next ten years, including extended stays in Dresden and in the United States. His first series of etchings was published in 1905, and he supplemented his income while in America by giving private lessons in etching.

In 1907 Laboureur returned to France, but soon thereafter moved to London, and once again back to France in 1909. His first one-man show was held in New York in 1917. Shortly thereafter, he embarked on a long and successful career as a book illustrator, with more than fifty titles to his credit. Laboureur founded the Société des Peintres-Graveurs Indépendants in 1923. He settled ultimately in Kerfahler, in Brittany, where he died.

Armin Landeck (1905 - 1984)

Born in Crandon, Wisconsin, Landeck graduated from Columbia University in 1927, and studied life drawing with George B. Bridgman at the Art Students League. He later met English printmaker Stanley William Hayter, and studied printmaking Hayter's Atelier 17. In 1928 and 1929, Landeck traveled in Europe. Returning to New York, he moved to to East Cornwall, Connecticut and devoted his time to printmaking and teaching. In 1931, he accepted a teaching position at the Brearly School in New York City and remained there until his retirement in 1958.

In the 1930s, Landeck created a series of city views that captured the feel of New York during that difficult period and which earned popular and critical acclaim, establishing his reputation as a skillful printmaker. He was elected a National Academician, a Guggenheim fellow, a member of the Society of American Etchers and Society of American Graphic Artists.

Julius John Lankes (1884 - 1960)

Printmaker Julius J. Lankes was born in Buffalo, New York. He graduated from the Buffalo Commercial and Electro-Mechanical Institute and worked as a draftsman prior to his studies at the Art Students’ League of Buffalo and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. By the early 1920s, his woodcuts were published in in numerous periodicals; his career as an artist spanned four decades, during which Lankes created approximately 1400 works. He taught at Wells College, Aurora, New York, and continued his freelance work. By 1941, he was elected to the National Academy of Design. In 1950, he relocated to Durham, North Carolina, where he lived until his death.

Barbara Latham (1896 - 1989)

Painter, print maker, and book illustrator Barbara Latham was born in Walpole, Massachusetts and raised in Norwich, Connecticut. Artistically adept in her youth, she studied in summer programs and in addition to classes at the Art Students League in New York, Latham pursued formal studies at Pratt institute in Brooklyn, from which she graduated in 1919.

Settling in Taos, New Mexico as an illustrator, she met and married the artist Howard Cook. The two lived and worked in the American Southwest and traveled extensively. Latham was the first artist in residence at the Roswell Museum, where the couple wintered and settled permanently in 1973.

Louis LeBreton (1818 - 1866)

LeBreton was a French painter who served as a naval surgeon on several exploratory voyages and who produced a series of lithographs depicting ships, seascapes, ports of call, and cultural details.

Fred Thomas Larson (1868 - 1944)

Chicago artist Fred Larson was trained as a commercial lithographer. He was essentially self-taught and became an adept painter, water colorist, and wood engraver by working with a like-minded group of friends in the group known as the Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts. He taught block printing to the young Gustave Baumann at the P&C. In later years, Larson traveled to New Orleans, and produced many of his best-known images based on his experiences there and along the Mississippi River; his 1929 book, Sketching in New Orleans and Along the Mississippi, is both a record of his travels and a valuable guide to his artistic philosophy.

Dominique Lecomte (1959 - )

A native of Rambervillers, a small French town in Les Vosges, Dominique Lecomte is an accomplished printmaker and photographer who studied visual art at Ecole de l’Image in nearby Epinal, where he first exhibited works in various media. Lecomte emigrated to the United States in 1994 to teach philosophy at the International School of Boston but subsequently devoted himself to art, specializing in linocuts and woodcuts using subjects photographed in his travels, later incorporating photography itself as a medium of artistic expression. His work is held in numerous private and public collections throughout the world.

Louis Legrand (1863 - 1951)

Printmaker Louis Legrand was born in Dijon in 1863. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Dijon while working as a bank clerk and subsequently moved to Paris where he worked as a caricaturist and satirist for La Journee, Le Journal Amusant, and Courrier Francais. Two of his satirical drawings precipitated an obscenity lawsuit against Legrand, who was acquitted, convicted on appeal by the state, and sentenced for a brief term for refusing to pay the fine.

He subsequently met the Belgian artist Felicien Rops, who taught Legrand the etching process. He used these new skills to produce images based on the night life of Montmartre in all its flavors for various French journals with particular emphasis on dancers, both established and aspirant, Parisian café life, and the social scenes of the day. In addition, he illustrated a number of editions of novels by leading 19th century American and European authors. In 1906, Legrand was made a knight of the Légion d’Honneur, but died in obscurity in Livry-Gargan, France.

Wilhelm Leibl (1844 - 1900)

Painter and Printmaker Wilhelm Leibl was born in Cologne, where his father was the director of the Cathedral choir. In 1861, he began his artistic training with the painter Hermann Becker and entered the Munich Academy in 1864, studying with several artists including Carl Theodor von Piloty. Leibl joined three colleagues in establishing a joint studio in Munich, where Gustave Courbet exhibited his work at about the same time, making a considerable impression on many artists including Leibl, whose work became less formal and academic as a result.

At Courbet's urging, Leibl went to Paris where he met Édouard Manet, but was forced to return to Germany in 1870, where he settled in rural Bavaria, where he painted everyday scenes in a realistic and unsentimental manner. During the first half of the 1870s, Leibl executed a series of 19 etchings. His work was included in the Berlin Secession exhibition the following year. He died in Würzburg.

Chester Leich (1899 - 1978)

Painter and etcher Chester Leich was born in Evansville, Indiana but spent much of his youth in Europe, studying art and graphic techniques in both Germany and Italy, where he traveled widely during vacations. Upon his return to the U. S., Leich first established a studio in Evansville, then in New York, and ultimately at Leonia, New Jersey where he settled until the outbreak of World War Two, when he volunteered as a cartographer for the U. S. Coast and Geodetic survey in Washington, D. C., working there until 1956.
His graphic work, consisting mainly of landscape etchings and drypoints, was exhibited at The Society of Washington Printmakers, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and at venues in Paris, London, Stockholm, and Tokyo. Leich also conducted classes in both painting and printmaking techniques. His etchings are held in the permanent collections of the National Collection of Fine Arts, the Library of Congress, the Society of American Etchers, the National Academy of Design and numerous such institutions. He died in Alexandria, Virginia.

Painter, illustrator and commercial artist Norbert Lenz was born in Norwalk, Ohio and received his artistic training at both the Huntington Polytechnic Institute and the Cleveland School of Art. During his career Lenz exhibited his paintings and drawings at such institutions as the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Butler Institute of American Art. Today the art of Norbert Lenz is held by the Columbus Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Butler Institute of American Art.

Auguste-Louis Lepère (1849 - 1918)

Born in Paris, woodcutter and wood engraver Auguste Lepère studied with Joseph Smeeton between 1862 and 1867. He then studied drawing at the School of Lecoq de Boisbaudran, and in 1872, he created a workshop in Paris in partnership with Henri Paillard, producing illustrations for The illustrated World and L'Illustration. Over time, Lepère came to disdain the hyper-realistic rendering of tonality that was then the rage and instead turned to the stark delineation of subjects typical of the early period of woodcutting.

In 1888, in partnership with three like-minded colleagues, he founded L'Estampe Originale, an effort to restore the integrity of the woodcut, then besieged by the rising new technologies. Lepère is widely regarded as the person most responsible for the revival of classical wood engraving in Europe. In 1892, he established residence at Saint-Jean-de-Monts, where he lived and worked amid a circle of friends from all branches of the arts. He died at Domme, in Dordogne, France.

David Levine (1926 – 2009)

Caricaturist and painter David Levine was born in Brooklyn, New York. His father was a clothing manufacturer and his mother was a nurse. He first studied at the School of the Brooklyn Museum Of Art, the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, as well as the Eighth Street School in Manhattan and the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia. He is best known for his pen-and-ink caricatures, which appeared from 1963 to 2007 in The New York Review of Books and publications including The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Time, and The Washington Post. He is less well known for his beautifully executed paintings, held by institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the National Portrait Gallery, London. Levine's work has been widely exhibited, and he was elected an Associate Member of the National Academy of Design. He died in New York City.

Julian Levi (1874 - 1971)

Born in Yorkville, New York, Julian Levi’s parents moved to Philadelphia in 1906, where he eventually studied under Henry McCarter and Arthur Carles at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In 1919, he was awarded a Cresson Traveling Scholarships by the Academy; he spent the summer of 1920 in Italy, followed by four years in Paris, where he exhibited paintings in the 1921 and 1922 Salons d’Automne. During that period, Levi met Jules Pascin and other contemporaries and returned for two years beginning in 1926.

While in Philadelphia, Levi participated in several collaborative exhibitions and met the noted collector Albert Barnes. He moved to New York in 1932 and was active in a number of artists’ groups including the American Artists’ Congress. He was elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters. From 1936 – 1938, he was a member of the Federal Arts Project in New York. He taught at the Art Students’ League beginning in 1946, at the New School for Social Research, together with a number of teaching appointments elsewhere in the U.S. and Europe.

His paintings and prints are held by numerous museums and academic institutions. Julian Levi became an Associate Member of the National Academy of Design in 1973, and was elected to Full Membership in 1976.

Jack Levine (1915 - 2010)

Painter and printmaker Jack Levine was born to Lithuanian immigrant parents in Boston’s South End. His prodigious natural talent was accompanied by high disdain for pretense and hypocrisy wherever it might be found, which informed his staunch figurative style. At age fourteen, Levine began art studies under Denman Ross at Harvard University, and found employment in the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Arts program; two of his paintings from that era were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in 1936. The following year, another of his paintings was acquired by MOMA for its permanent collection, the first of many such acquisitions by leading American institutions, accompanied by important exhibitions of his work at galleries and museums on both sides of the Atlantic.

Social consciousness infused Levine’s work, with emphasis on such issues as civil rights in America, prison conditions in Spain, and the human condition in general. He died in New York City, where he had lived for many years.

Martin Levine (1945 - )

Printmaker and teacher Martin Levine was born in New York City. His etchings and lithographs are characterized by their meticulous realism, and are principally architectural in character. His work has been exhibited in many juried exhibitions here and abroad, and is held in many private and institutional collections, including the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Levine has taught at the State University of New York at Stony Brook since 1986, and is the recipient of many awards, including the Society of American Graphic Artists National Print Exhibition; National Academy of Design Annual Exhibition; Bienal de Ibiza Grafic Internacional Exhibition, Spain; and the Library of Congress National Exhibition of Prints.

Herschel Levit (1912 - 1986)

Born in Philadelphia, painter and printmaker Herschel Levit studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and at the Art Institute of Chicago. His work was exhibited at numerous institutions including the Library of Congress, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Springfield Art Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago. During the Depression era, he was employed by the WPA Federal Artist's Project and received commissions to produce murals at The Rowan School, Philadelphia; the Registry of Deeds in Washington, D.C.; and Post Office buildings in Lewisville, Ohio and Jenkintown, Pennsylvania. For over thirty years, Levit was a faculty member at Pratt Institute. In addition, he was a prolific freelance illustrator with an extensive client roster. He died in New York City.

Allen Lewis (1873 - 1957)

Lewis was born in Mobile, Alabama in 1873 and studied with Jean-Léon Gerome at the Ecole des Beaus Arts in Paris, creating his first etchings in 1895. In 1900 his work, along with fellow Americans Whistler and Pennell, was accepted in the printmaking section of the Paris Salon. He returned to New York in 1902, where he became a member of Alfred Steiglitz's circle. His etchings were exhibited at Steiglitz's Gallery 291 with a show of 43 etchings, drypoints, and bookplates. He was an Associate Member of the Photo-Secession and one of his photographs was included in the 1912 issue of The Camera Work. He also became known for his color woodcuts. In 1915 he won a Gold Medal at the Panama Pacific Exposition in San Francisco. Lewis taught in New York at the Art Students League between 1924 and 1932 with Pennell and from 1932-34 at the New School for Social Research. He died in New Jersey.

Max Liebermann (1847 - 1935)

Renowned painter and printmaker Max Liebermann was born to a wealthy Jewish family in Berlin. He first studied law and philosophy at the University of Berlin, but subsequently studied painting and drawing in Weimar, Paris, and in the Netherlands. Following service in the Franco-Prussian War, he lived and worked in Munich, returning permanently to Berlin in 1884.

Liebermann gathered a large collection of French Impressionist work, which inspired his choice of bourgeois scenes and garden motifs. He was best known for his portraits, including those of Einstein and Hindenburg, as well as of Max Liebermann. At the time of his 50th birthday, he was given a solo exhibition at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin, and in the following year he was elected to the academy. From 1899 to 1911 he led the premier avant-garde formation in Germany, the Berlin Secession. In 1920 Liebermann was elected president of the Prussian Academy of Arts. On his 80th birthday, in 1927, Liebermann was celebrated with a large exhibition and made an honorary citizen of Berlin.

But in 1933 he resigned when the academy decided to no longer exhibit works by Jewish artists, before he would have been forced to do so under laws restricting the rights of Jews. Liebermann died on February 8, 1935, at his home on Berlin's Pariser Platz, near the Brandenburg Gate. News of his death was suppressed by the National Socialist regime, and none of his colleagues from the Prussian Academy were present at his funeral. Nonetheless, more than 100 friends and relatives were present, including Käthe Kollwitz, Otto Nagel, and Bruno Cassirer.

Russell T. Limbach (1904 - 1971)

Born in Massillon, Ohio, Russell T. Limbach was a painter and printmaker. He briefly attended the Cleveland School of Art, then left to become an apprentice in the sketch room of a small lithographic plant there, learning and refining his technique under the guidance of four experienced staff artists. He realized the artistic potential of printmaking at a local exhibit where he first saw Whistler etchings. He left for Europe in 1928 and studied for nearly a year under a fourth-generation lithographer in Paris. Returning to Cleveland in the depths of the depression, he traveled to New York City, where he found work as the Art Editor of The New Masses. Limbach subsequently was asked to organize the Graphics Division of the WPA Arts Project in New York. He was the recipient of numerous awards. His works are held in the collections numerous libraries and museums including the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Los Angeles Museum of Art. He died at Sherman, Connecticut.

Lionel Lindsay (1874 - 1961)

Born in Creswick, Victoria, Australian water colorist, engraver and etcher Lionel Lindsay grew up in an artistically talented family. A student at the National Gallery School in Melbourne, Lindsay also studied with George Coates. He taught himself engraving and etching prior to a lengthy trip to England and Spain. Upon his return, he established himself as a freelance artist and journalist in Sydney and held a highly successful exhibition of his etchings there in 1907 with the Society of Artists and became the first president of the Australian Printer-Etcher's Society when it was formed in 1921.

Lindsay had another highly successful exhibition, this time in the London galleries of the at the renowned art dealer Colnaghi. The favorable critical reception that his work received in London secured his reputation as a major British printmaker and water colorist. At home, he became a Trustee of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and in 1941 was knighted for his contributions to Australian art. Lindsay died at Melbourne.

Carlos Llerena Aguirre (1952 - )

Born in Peru, illustrator, artist, and printmaker Carlos Llerena Aguirre holds an M.F.A., in Art & Design, an A.M., in Art Education from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign , an M.A. in Graphics from Hunter College C.U.N.Y, and a B.F.A. in Advertising Design from the School of Visual Arts. He has taught at the School of Visual Arts, Philadelphia University of the Arts, Syracuse University, California College of Arts and Crafts, University of California at Berkeley, Ringling School of Art and Design, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Poynter Institute for Media Studies. He is currently a tenured professor at the University of Miami. He has represented both Peru and the United States with his woodcuts in numerous international exhibitions.

Locke, an accomplished painter and printmaker, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He studied at the Ohio Mechanics Institute (later the Cincinnati Art Academy), and at the Art Students League of New York under Joseph Pennell. He traveled to Europe and studied in Paris. Locke taught lithography at the Art Students League for a number of years. George Lockwood (1929 - 1969)

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Lockwood attended Cooper Union, the New School for Social Research, and received his undergraduate and MFA degrees from Yale University. He taught at several colleges and universities including Smith College, Amherst College, The Massachusetts College of Art, and the Rhode Island School of Design. His work resides in the permanent collections of numerous museums and libraries, and in many private collections.

Robert Fulton Logan (1889 - 1959)

Born near Lauder, Manitoba, portrait painter and etcher Robert Fulton Logan studied art in Paris at age 16, followed by studies at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Art Institute of Chicago. For twenty years, he was a faculty member at Connecticut College, retiring in 1954. In his later years, Logan headed the Art Department at Newton College of the Sacred Heart. His work was widely exhibited in major galleries and museums in both Europe and the United States, including the Corcoran Gallery, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Paris Salon (1921 – 1930). He died at Boston, Massachusetts.

Erica Lohman (1901 - 1984)

Beginning at age 4, Erica Lohman was one of a group of six girls at Isadora Duncan's Forest School in Grunewald, Germany (near Berlin), variously called Duncaninchen (little Duncans) or Isadorables. All six were adopted by Duncan in 1919, given her name, and toured with her until 1921. Of the six, only Erica abandoned dance to become an artist.

Born in Grayslake, Illinois, water colorist and printmaker Charles Oglesby Longabaugh studied at Wheaton College and at the Art Institute of Chicago. He traveled extensively throughout Mexico and the American Southwest. He is best known as a regionalist landscape painter and etcher. Longabaugh died at Libertyville, Illinois.

Robert Lostutter (1939- )

Well known water colorist and printmaker Robert Lostutter studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, where he became a member of the Chicago Imagists, a breakaway group of surrealist artists based there. His early work was characterized by its dark and fantastical aspect. Today, he is best known for his meticulous depictions of hybrid avian-humans, and his work has found its way into many collections, including those of the Brooklyn Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Smithsonian Institution, the Kansas City Art Institute, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.

Eugene E. Loving (1908 - 1971)

Born in Round Rock, Texas in 1908, Eugene Loving graduated from Round Rock High School ca. 1926 and moved to New Orleans, drawn by the French Quarter’s artistic laissez-faire atmosphere. Loving became immersed in New Orleans’ vibrant arts scene and became a member of the New Orleans Arts and Crafts Club. His work consisted largely of etchings and serigraphs, most of them depicting the streetscapes and buildings of the Vieux Carré with great sensitivity. He is presumed to have resided in New Orleans for the forty-five years spanning his arrival and death.

John T. "Jet" Lowe (1947 - )

Fine arts photographer, since 1970 the Baltimore-based Jet Lowe has traveled the world capturing architectural and engineering landmarks. For thirty-five of those years, Lowe was the engineering photographer for the Historic American Engineering Record division of the National Park Service, and held administrative roles there as well. Some forty thousand of his images are held by the Prints and Photographs division of the Library of Congress. Lowe has also undertaken freelance work for many publications and institutions. He holds several advanced degrees in photography and is a frequent lecturer on the subject.

Born in Riga, Latvia, Nat Lowell emigrated to New York City and studied at the Art Students League with Carroll Beckwith, Gutzon Borglum, and Siddons Mowbray. He is best known for his detailed etchings of New York City and its landmarks. He taught at Hunter College and at the New School in New York. His works are represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Newark Museum, the New York Public Library, the New York Historical Society, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the Library of Congress.

Louis Lozowick (1892 - 1973)

Painter and printmaker Louis Lozowick, is best known for his Art Deco lithographs, which he first created in the 1920s, was born in Ludvinovka, Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire. He studied at the Kiev Art School before emigrating to the United States in 1906, joining his brother in New York. He continued his studies at the National Academy of Design and subsequently graduated with honors from Ohio State University. Lozowick lived in Europe from 1919 to 1924, where he met Moholy-Nagy, Lissitsky, and several other avant-garde artists.

Returning to the New York City, he joined the editorial board of New Masses in 1924, where his geometric realistic style was well received. In 1943 Lozowick moved to New Jersey and continued to paint and make prints that dealt primarily with social realist themes, an interest that endured throughout his career. He was a member of the American Artists Congress. Lozowick is represented in numerous institutional collections, including those of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Modern art in New York; The Art Institute of Chicago; The national Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.; and the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas. Luigi Lucioni (1900 - 1988)

Painter and etcher Luigi Lucioni was born in Malnate in northern Italy. By the time his family emigrated to the United States in 1911, he was already an excellent draftsman. He won a design competition four years later that allowed him to attend Cooper Union. He subsequently attended the National Academy of Design and there he won a Tiffany Foundation scholarship that allowed him to return to Italy for study. As a result of his stay in Italy, his work bore the imprint of the classical realist style. He is best known for his portraits and landscapes. Lucioni maintained studios in both New York City and in Vermont. He won many honors including first prize at the Carnegie International Exhibition (1939) and the Corcoran Biennial. He was a member of the Society of American Etchers and the Allied Art Association, and taught portraiture at the Art Students League in New York City.

Alexandre Lunois (1863 - 1916)

Etcher and lithographer Alexandre Lunois was born in Paris. In 1880, he apprenticed with the Parisian printer-lithographer Achille Sirouy, under whom he produced his first two lithographs and an etching, all based on the work of leading artists. These three prints were shown at the Salon of French artists in 1882, and Lunois continued to exhibit such work - derived from originals created by masters such as Delacroix, Daumier, and Béraud - through the salon of 1890. In 1886, Lunois began producing original etchings and in 1888 he explored the low countries followed by travels through Algeria and Morocco, returning to Paris with a portfolio of sketches and drawings in late 1889.

He at once began to work with both color and black-and-white lithography and exhibited five lithographs in black at the Universal Exhibition that year. He attracted the attention of noted dealer Edmund Sagot, who first published his lithographs; from 1894, he was represented by gallerist and editor Gustave Pellet. Lunois died at Pecq, in the western suburbs of Paris, where he had settled.
