Bror Julius Olsson Nordfeldt (1878 - 1955)
Bror Nordfeldt was an etcher. engraver, and painter. Upon arrival in the United States in 1891, he lived in Chicago and worked as a typesetter. Encouraged to develop his artistic talent, Nordfeldt enrolled at the Chicago Art Institute, where he became an assistant to muralist Albert Herter, whom he accompanied to Paris in 1900. He remained in Europe for three years, studying under Jean Paul Laurens at the Académie Julian in Paris and learning etching and woodblock cutting under Frank M. Fletcher at the Royal Academy of London. Nordfeldt returned to Chicago in 1903, where he worked as a portrait artist, set designer, and teacher until he left for the East in 1907.
He first received widespread critical acclaim arising from two shows of his paintings in Chicago in 1911 and 1912, and a silver medal for an etching that he exhibited at the Panama-Pacific exposition of 1915 in San Francisco. From 1917 to 1940, he lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Much of his work there depicted the indigenous Pueblo tribes in their native setting. He spent his last years in Lambertville, New Jersey.
