Troy Kinney (1871 - 1938)
Artist, etcher, and author Troy Kinney was born in Kansas City, Missouri. He attended Yale University, graduating in 1896. After a brief stint as a newspaper illustrator in Baltimore, he enrolled in the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1900 he married Margaret West Kinney (1872 - 1952) who as “The Kinneys,” were leading illustrators of early 20th century books and periodicals. Troy became a member of the Chicago Society of Etchers, and was also a member of the Society of American Etchers and the National Academy of Design.
Kinney was widely recognized for his portrayals of dance performers, working with Anna Pavlova, Ruth St. Denis and others over a number of years. He and his wife co-authored and illustrated a number of books about dance. Troy Kinney died at his home in Falls Village, Connecticut.

Hand-colored drypoint, 1916; edition of 138 numbered impressions. Ours is a hand-colored trial proof of the color version, of which 82 were printed in addition to 56 of the uncolored impressions. Image size 9-78” x 12-1/16”; sheet size 14¾” x 19-1/8”. A fine impression in overall fine condition, with about a 1” band of darkening across the bottom of the sheet, well away from the sight area.
