
Mathey was a painter and an accomplished etcher, born in Paris, who studied art with Leon Coignet and first exhibited his work at Paris Salon of 1868. He was awarded a medal by the Paris Salon in both 1876 and 1885, and won the Gold Medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1889 . In 1889, the French Government awarded him the Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur.
