Born in Toulouse, France, de Latenay studied at the Académie Julian in Paris, but was largely self-taught. Originally a painter of marine views and landscapes his work later included lithographs and etchings that, as with the works of many of his peers, was influenced by contemporary Japanese art. He exhibited with great success at the Universal Expositions of 1886, 1889, and 1900.
