Portfolio of sixty-eight wood engravings, edition of 300, published in 1968 by The Two Horse Press. The engravings were printed by Will and Sebastian Carter at the Rampant Lions Press, Cambridge, England. Fifty-five of the engravings were printed from the original blocks; thirteen were reproduced from wood engravings because the original blocks had been planed smooth and reused. Includes a 9-3/4" x 12" booklet bound in dark orange cover stock with a diagonal crease in the lower right front cover, containing "An Appreciation" by Ruari McLean and "A Glimpse Of The Artist" by Armida Maria-Theresa Colt. A second folder contains the engravings and a checklist.. Both are housed in a clamshell portfolio box made by Gray's of Cambridge, covered with brown cloth with a dark orange title strip pasted to the spine; the box measures 10-3/8" x 12-13/16" x 1½" and is in sound condition but with moderate shelf wear. This is copy 50, and is signed by George Mackley on the edition statement following the title page. The text and engravings, printed on mould-made paper, are in fine condition.

The number of proofs is not known, but this copy is warmly inscribed "The working proof for the great whale from Moby Dick - for Dear Gordon - Barry" by Moser to his friend, the late bookseller and publisher Gordon Cronin. A spectacular accomplishment in its own right, framed using archival materials.

The enduring popularity of Gerhart Hauptmann's play Die Weber drew talented artists into its orbit, including Emil Orlik, who created this poster in 1897. Upon first seeing the poster, Hauptmannwas so impressed that he invited Orlik to Berlin. Die Weber, Orlik's first theater poster, was the catalyst for his subsequent work in poster and set design. From 1903 until his death, Orlik taught at the Arts and Crafts Academy in Berlin, nevertheless maintaining an astonishing output of work that remains highly prized by collectors. This rare poster, connecting as it does three such outsized talents - Hauptmann, Orlik, and Käthe Kollwitz, who was so affected by an early performance of the play that she created the print cycle Die Weberaufstand in response - is a remarkable association piece.

A wonderful series of images, Ports Of America is in effect a series of freeze frames, which capture the energy and scope of the American maritime scene at the height of the great 1920s boom. In this era harbors were emphatically workplaces, unadorned by high-priced residential development and by the intrusion of trendy boutiques and galleries.

These etchings are especially interesting in their portrayal of both steel and wooden hulls during this transitional period, in effect the twilight of sail in commerce that was all but obliterated by the coming Great Depression. Very good condition.

A most interesting print, probably based on a photograph created by "spirit photographer" William Mumler, who specialized in images pairing the living and the departed. Mary Todd Lincoln was an ardent spiritualist both before and after her husband's death. At a seance in Boston which she attended using a pseudonym, her late husband is said to have appeared before her. Mumler's interpretative composite photograph depicted Mrs. Lincoln seated and her husband standing behind her with his hands resting on her shoulders. Fine condition.

Offset lithograph after an original charcoal drawing on wove paper, 1910. Image size 7” x 11” with full margins. Published in Camera Work, Volume XXXVI, October, 1911. The original drawing was one of eighty-three works by Picasso exhibited at Alfred Stieglitz’s 291 Gallery at the suggestion of Edward Steichen and with the help of Leo Stein. His sister Gertrude wrote essays about Picasso for the exhibition and in Camera Work. It was the first exhibit of the artist’s work in the United States. Standing Nude is the only work purchased by Stieglitz for his personal collection. It prefigures Marcel Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase, which was exhibited at the Armory Show staged in Manhattan in February and March, 1913. Very good overall condition.
